What Is a Soulmaker?

A soulmaker is a person who has taken up their own life as material. Not someone unusually spiritual, unusually artistic, or unusually wounded: someone who has decided that experience is for something, and who works it, daily and deliberately, the way a maker works anything.

The word is the person-form of soulmaking, the practice of converting experience into depth. This press is named for it, so we should be able to say what we mean.

The recognizable marks

You have met soulmakers, whether or not anyone used the word. The marks are consistent.

They metabolize. Everyone has experiences; soulmakers digest them. The hard year is not carried as grievance or buried as trauma-not-to-be-named. It has been worked, on pages, in letters, in long walks, until it yielded, and you can feel the difference in how they tell it.

Their attention has weight. Depth is not solemnity. It is the quality of being fully where they are, which everyone in the room can feel. It is built the only way it can be built, by years of practicing contact with their own experience.

They are specific. Keats defined a soul as an intelligence that has become "personally itself." Soulmakers are unmistakably themselves, not as performance but as residue: the shape left by a life actually undergone rather than merely passed through.

They keep a practice. Always. A page, a sit, a sketchbook, a monthly letter. Never grand, rarely discussed, and it is the tell. Depth is a daily product.

What a soulmaker is not

Not a guru; the work is on their own material, and it never finishes. Not a sufferer; pain alone makes nobody deep, and the romance of the wound is one of the practice's named traps. Not a self-improver; the soulmaker is not becoming better against a benchmark but becoming more thoroughly themselves.

Becoming one

There is no threshold to cross, only the practice to begin: fifteen minutes, one honest page, tomorrow again. The people described above are not a different kind of person. They are ordinary people some years into the work.
