Living the Sutras—Freedom in All Conditions
by Courtenay @ Soulmaker Press

Editing the newly released The Eros Sutras, Volume 5: Liberation & Justice over the past year, while Nicole, the author, was on trial and then wrongfully incarcerated, I kept finding myself asking: Does she still believe all this? Could these teachings really hold up under such extreme conditions?
And then came Jailbirds in Flight—the memoir she wrote from prison.
Reading it, I realized the answer was yes. She is living exactly what she wrote in these Sutras: that freedom isn't found by escaping our circumstances, but by awakening within them.
As she writes in Liberation & Justice:
"While our circumstances may or may not change…we find ourselves new—reborn into the exact same life and the exact same circumstances, only now the person looking out through our eyes is entirely different. Something happened and God is looking out through our eyes, not in the New Age 'I am God' way—this one does not see things that way—but in a 'this, all of this, this whole beautiful disaster, I can love this' kind of way."
That line stayed with me.
Lately, I've been asking myself: Can I live that way too? I am not facing anywhere near the life challenges that Nicole is living inside of. And, day to day, I still find circumstances that are outside of what I would like.
Nicole has always said these teachings are meant to work in any condition. And now I am watching her live them from prison.
It's the culmination of a two-decade journey—and the beginning of living freedom from the inside out.
With love,
